Sushi Ren, Underwood

Found a suburban sushi train paradise at the south side of Brisbane! Sushi Ren just recently opened and everything is $3.5! Yes, including all the salmon, scallop, urchin… you name it 🙂 Located on the busy Logan Road opposite of Big Gun Chinese and Genki Ya, this … Continue reading

2010 Sakura Culinary Trip: Izuei Unagi (伊豆栄) & Gyunochikara Gyudon (牛の力), Ueno

Ueno Koen (上野公園) is Tokyo’s most crowded and most popular spot for cherry blossom viewing, the park has more than 1000 cherry trees and Japanese love to go there at night for yozakura (night sakura).  According to news report there were more than one million people visited Ueno Park on one single day!

Feeling hungry?  There are food stalls selling Okonomiyaki, Takoyaki, YakiSoba etc etc.

Izuei (伊豆栄 本店) has been opened in Tokyo for 270 years!  Their signature dish is Unagi – Grilled Eel.  Izuei sourced the best eel in Japan and used charcoal to grill the fish.  The cheapest Unagi Set is around 1800Yen (A$22) and the most expensive set is 21000Yen (A$255)!

Each Unagi Set comes with a complimentary Eel Liver Soup, it sounds a bit weird to me, eel liver… but the soup was actually quite tasty!  We also ordered a Crab Meat Salad as entree, surprisingly it’s one of the BEST crab meat salad I’ve tasted in my life!  The crab meat was very fresh and the accompany vinegar ponzu sauce was very refreshing!

Look at the shiny colours of the charcoal-grilled unagi!  What else do I have to say?  Delicious!!!

Mr F is not a “fish” person instead he is a Wagyu meatlover.  I was so glad that I brought him to this Gyudonya at Ueno – he said by far this is still the BEST Gyodon (Beef Rice) he had in his life (see other Gyudon stories here and here).  Gyu No Chikara (牛の力) is located right opposite of JR Ueno Station, at the entrance there was a big sign in Japanese saying “100% Japanese Beef Used” (国産牛100%使用店) and each day they’ll put up a sign showing what areas of beef they’ll be using on the menu eg. Kobe, Hiroshima, Hokaiido etc.  And guess how much a bowl of Gyudon (beef rice) cost?  Tokyo Gyudon (東京牛丼) only costs 590Yen (A$7)!!!

What makes Gyu no Chikara stand out from the other chained competitors is their BEEF!  Top quality of Wagyu simmered in sukiyaki sauce, the beef was soft, tender and juicy!  So salivating!  Next time if you have a chance to visit Ueno, Gyu no Chikara is a must go Gyodonya!
